What’s better than green beer? Homemade green food!!!

St Patricks Day is right around the corner and all I hear about right now is where you can go to get green beer. Since Rykse’s doesn’t serve alcohol we had to get creative. My team came through in a big way this year as we are offering some tasty items this week. None of the items have green beer as an ingredient but I think you will still be impressed.

We started in the bakery and my staff came up with some tasty desserts. We have decorated Shamrock cookies and Grasshopper Pie. Our head bread baker also came up with a few Green loaves of bread (don’t freak out when you come in it’s not mold). We have green Oatmeal bread as well as a green Rye bread. If you are looking for a green breakfast then make sure to try our mint coffee cake which is really tasty as well.

Have time to eat a meal before you grab your baked goods on the way out? We have the following items on our St. Patricks Day menu:

Breakfast

For not being Irish we did our best to get into an Irish mood. The food might look a little funky (or should I say green) but I promise it will taste good. So stop in and try some of our specials this week. See you soon!

We are currently looking to hire a day time line cook and a catering assistant. A day time cook is responsible for assembling menu items as tickets come in and some cleaning. A catering assistant helps with catering set ups and deliveries. If you or anyone you know would be interested in either positions, please come in and fill out an application

April Cupcakes

Our bakers cooked up some fabulous new cupcakes for the month of April. You won’t find cupcakes like ours anywhere else.

Smores’~ graham cracker based cupcake filled with chocolate and marshmallow fluff. Topped with marshmallows, mini chocolate chips, and a dusting of graham cracker. You’ll feel as though you’re sitting right by the campfire.

Mixed Berry~ graham cracker based cupcake filled with mixed berry cream. Topped with cream cheese frosting, a fanned fresh strawberry, and a couple blueberries.

Chocolate Peanut Butter~ graham cracker based cupcake filled with peanut butter cream. Topped with chocolate frosting and chopped peanuts.

Rykse’s Toast and Grandmother’s Love

Throughout my younger years I always had the opportunity to have many visits with my grandparents. Some of my favorite memories of being a child are the times I got to spend with my grandparents. My grandmother made the greatest toast that I have ever eaten. We call it Rykse’s Toast. Those of you familiar with the area know of the restaurant Rykse’s. Well, I always thought that the toasts name was “Rykses”, that’s what my grandmother referred to it as. Every morning I woke up, my grandmother would make me two slices of Rykse’s toast with butter and peanut butter. It was the greatest toast I ever had. The sad thing was that I could never duplicate that great taste that my grandmother could produce. I made my mom buy the same peanut butter, butter, and Rykse’s bread, but still could not make the toast the same way that my grandmother could. Even when my grandmother came to visit us in Detroit she could make that same great toast that she makes in Kalamazoo.

It took me many years to figure out that it was not the ingrediants used or the brand of toaster; it was the person making it, my Grandmother Patricia Anderson. It was the love that made that toast so great; not the bread, butter, or peanut butter. I alaways believed she made it special for me as she had done so many things for all of her grandchildren that were special to them. Grandma was a loving, generous, caring and supportive woman that loved her husband, children, grand children, and great grandchildren.

I will miss my grandmother and embrace all of the times that I had with her. She has a special place in my heart, even though I almost took her out when I hit a home run ball into her chair at a baseball game she was watching me play. But then again, I told her I was going to hit a home run for her.
